Objective

Design the invariants/constraints system that allows customers to express free-form fashion hard lines in natural language. This is a key differentiator — no other service offers this.

The Problem

Existing style quizzes force customers into pre-defined categories. But real fashion constraints are nuanced and personal:

  • "I will never wear anything that requires ironing"
  • "I need at least one pocket in every outfit"
  • "I only wear high-waisted pants"
  • "No synthetic fabrics touching my skin"
  • "I refuse to wear anything with a visible logo"
  • "I need bra-friendly necklines"
  • "I only wear flats, never heels"
  • "Nothing dry clean only — I need machine washable"
  • "Short sleeves only — long sleeves make me overheat"
  • "I can't wear turtlenecks (sensory issue)"
  • "No animal products — vegan only"
  • "I never buy fast fashion"

Design Requirements

Input Method

  • Free-form text field with examples
  • "Tell us in your own words: what are your fashion hard lines?"
  • Suggestions/examples shown below (clickable to add)
  • Can add as many as needed
  • Updated anytime via profile settings

Natural Language Processing

  • Parse free-form text into structured constraints:
    • fabricConstraint: natural only, no synthetics, specific materials
    • careConstraint: machine washable, dry clean OK/NOT OK
    • styleConstraint: no logos, no crop tops, no prints, no specific necklines
    • colorConstraint: never wear yellow, only neutrals
    • `fitConstraint**: high-waisted, oversized only, fitted only
    • practicalConstraint: must have pockets, must be nursing-friendly
    • `ethicalConstraint**: vegan, fair trade, made in USA
    • `sensoryConstraint**: no wool, no tags, no itchy fabrics
    • `occasionConstraint**: office appropriate, date night only, casual only

Enforcement

  • Constraints must be strictly honored (no "we'll try to accommodate")
  • If a constraint would leave zero items in catalog → system flags to human stylist
  • Constraints cascade into curation engine as hard filters (not scoring factors)
  • Exception: "Stretch items" should NOT violate constraints (stretch is about pushing style, not breaking rules)

Language Requirements

  • Must use plain American English throughout
  • No fashion industry jargon
  • No intimidating terminology
  • Examples should feel relatable
  • 80%+ comprehension target (US consumer average reading level)

Deliverable
