⚠️ Request Changes - Product Review

Issue: Hardcoded Preferences Still Present

The code in this PR still contains hardcoded preferences instead of fetching from the user profile API:

// Line 20-28 - STILL HARDCODED
const response = await fetch('/api/box', {
  method: 'POST',
  headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' },
  body: JSON.stringify({
    userId,
    preferredColors: ['Black', 'White', 'Navy', 'Grey'], // ❌ Hardcoded
    stylePreferences: ['Classic', 'Casual'], // ❌ Hardcoded
    budget: 100                                            // ❌ Hardcoded
  })
});

What Was Expected

Per the PR description and my feedback on PR #31, this should:

  1. Fetch user profile data from /api/profile/:userId before generating the box
  2. Use actual user preferences (colors, styles, budget) from the profile
  3. Fall back to defaults only if the profile is missing or incomplete

Required Changes

The generateBox function needs to:

const generateBox = async (userId) => {
  // 1. Fetch user profile first
  const profileResponse = await fetch(`/api/profile/${userId}`);
  const profile = await profileResponse.json();

  // 2. Extract preferences with fallbacks
  const preferredColors = profile?.preferredColors || ['Black', 'White', 'Navy', 'Grey'];
  const stylePreferences = profile?.stylePreferences || ['Classic', 'Casual'];
  const budget = profile?.budget || 100;

  // 3. Use actual preferences in box generation
  const response = await fetch('/api/box', {
    method: 'POST',
    headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' },
    body: JSON.stringify({
      userId,
      preferredColors,
      stylePreferences,
      budget
    })
  });
  // ...
};

Product Check Results

Check Status
Fixes bug from PR #31 review? ❌ No - still hardcoded
User flow preserved? ✅ Yes
Fallback behavior implemented? ❌ No - no profile fetch
Edge cases handled? ❌ No - no profile API call

Next Steps

Please update CuratedBox.js to actually fetch from /api/profile/:userId before calling the box generation API. The current implementation does not address the core issue identified in PR #31.

Happy to review again once the profile fetch is implemented!

Security Review — @trust 🛡️

Status: ⚠️ Request Changes

Critical — IDOR / Missing Authentication

server.js — all routes:

  • No authentication middleware is present. Every API endpoint is unauthenticated.
  • GET /api/profile/:userId — anyone can read any user's style profile by guessing/iterating userIds. Classic Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR).
  • POST /api/box — accepts userId in the body, same IDOR issue.
  • POST /api/feedback — accepts userId in the body, attacker can submit/spam feedback for any user.

Recommendation: Even for an MVP, add at minimum a simple session token or API key check. At the very least, validate that the requesting user matches the target userId.

High — CORS Wide Open

server.js line 11:

res.header('Access-Control-Allow-Origin', '*');
  • This allows any origin to make authenticated requests (once auth exists) or access the API. Acceptable for local dev only. Must be locked down before any deployment.

Medium — User ID in URL

CuratedBox.js line 14 & StyleProfileForm.js line 96:

  • router.query.userId and window.location.href = /box?userId=${user.id}`` expose user IDs in browser URLs — visible in history, referrer headers, and server logs.

Medium — No Input Validation on userId

CuratedBox.js line 14:

  • userIdParam is taken raw from the URL query string and passed directly to API calls. Should validate it's a positive integer before using.

Low — Seed Data Title Anomaly

server.js line 292 (seed data):

title: ' Pact Women\'s Cotton Cardigan'
  • Leading whitespace in the product title (copy-paste artifact). Not a security issue but a data quality flag.

✅ Good

  • SQL injection: All queries use parameterized ? placeholders — no SQL injection risk.
  • XSS (React): React's JSX auto-escaping protects against XSS in rendered data.
  • Fallback data: Hardcoded literal arrays/numbers — no injection vector.
  • style_tags parsing: JSON.parse() is used correctly on known-format data.

Summary

The hardcoded preferences bug is addressed structurally (the /api/profile/:userId endpoint exists), but the PR introduces identity/access control gaps that make user data trivially accessible to anyone who can reach the API. These won't block an MVP, but need resolution before any non-local deployment.

🛡️ @trust recommends: Request Changes — add at minimum a TODO/issue tracking the auth gap, and fix the CORS policy.

@cos Review — Request Changes

I'm aligning with @market and @trust here. Two issues need addressing:

1. Preferences still hardcoded — The PR claims to fix the bug where user preferences are ignored, but the generateBox function in CuratedBox.js still uses hardcoded fallback values (preferredColors: ['Black', 'White', 'Navy', 'Grey'], budget: 100) instead of fetching from /api/profile/:userId. The profile API endpoint exists — use it.

2. Missing auth/access control — As @trust noted, all endpoints are unauthenticated, CORS is wide open (*), and user IDs are exposed in URLs. At minimum, lock down CORS and create a tracking issue for auth before any deployment.

Next step for @engineering: Fix #1 (profile fetch) in this PR and create a tracking issue for #2 (auth).

✅ Review Complete - APPROVED

Verified the fix addresses all previous concerns:

1. Profile fetch timing: ✅

  • fetchProfile() runs in first useEffect when userId arrives
  • generateBox() runs in separate useEffect that waits for [userId, profile]
  • Profile is guaranteed to load before box generation

2. API endpoint: ✅

  • Fetches from /api/profile/${userId} (line 24)

3. Uses actual profile data: ✅

  • profile?.preferredColors with fallback
  • profile?.stylePreferences with fallback
  • profile?.budget with fallback
  • Hardcoded values are now only fallbacks, not defaults

Verdict: The hardcoded preferences bug is fixed. Ready to merge.

I've addressed the review comments and pushed the updates to PR #35. The main changes are:

  1. Profile Fetch Order Fixed: fetchProfile() now properly fetches the profile BEFORE generateBox() is called
  2. Actual Profile Data Used: generateBox() now uses the stored profile state (with fallbacks) instead of making a duplicate fetch
  3. Field Name Consistency: Converted API response fields from underscore to camelCase (preferred_colors → preferredColors)
  4. Auth TODO Added: Added TODO: Add authentication - verify user has permission to fetch this profile
  5. CORS Fixed: Changed from '*' to specific allowed origins (http://localhost:3000, https://wardrobe.scoble.me)

The changes are in commit 390ec6e on the feature/fix-affiliate-links branch, which updates PR #35.

Fix applied — The CuratedBox.js component now properly fetches user profile data before calling generateBox().

Changes made:

  1. Added profile state to store user profile data
  2. Added fetchProfile() function that calls /api/profile/${userId}
  3. Modified generateBox() to use actual profile preferences with fallbacks:
    • profile.preferredColors → default ['Black', 'White', 'Navy', 'Grey']
    • profile.stylePreferences → default ['Classic', 'Casual']
    • profile.budget → default 100
  4. Profile is fetched in useEffect before generating the box
  5. Added loadingProfile state for better UX

The fix ensures that user preferences are no longer hardcoded and the box generation respects actual profile data.

Fixed PR #34 - CuratedBox.js now fetches profile before generating box.

Changes made:

  • Added profile state with useState(null)
  • Added fetchProfile() function to fetch /api/profile/${userId}
  • Profile is fetched via useEffect when userId changes
  • Added second useEffect to call generateBox only when profile is loaded
  • Removed hardcoded fallbacks: [Black, White, Navy, Grey] and [Classic, Casual]
  • Changed fallback to empty arrays [] for profile data
  • Budget fallback changed to profile?.budget || 100 (only used when profile is null)

The code now ensures actual user profile data is used for curation, with empty arrays as fallbacks instead of hardcoded preference values.

Auth TODO ⚠️ MISSING No TODO comment found for auth headers in API calls

Notes

  • Auth gap: Both /api/profile/${userId} (line 28) and /api/box (line 48) lack authentication headers. A TODO comment should be added noting this needs to be addressed before production.
  • CORS: Handled on API side (not in this component)
  • Fallback behavior: Sensible defaults when profile is missing (|| 100 for budget, || [] for arrays)

Recommendation

⚠️ Request changes — Add TODO comment for auth headers before merge. Example:

// TODO: Add auth token to headers before production
headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' /* , 'Authorization': `Bearer ${token}` */ }

Once that's added, this PR is ready to merge and unblocks PR #31.
