Problem (re-diagnosed 2026-06-02 19:00 PT, replaces closed speckl#43)

The TypeScript generator at compiler/src/generators/typescript-state-machine.ts:456-482 runs a post-emit preamble heuristic that silently invents const x: any = {} declarations for any identifier it cannot classify. The comment on the line is misleading — it claims the parser dropped let/forall, but the parser correctly emits let AST nodes (parser.ts:136, parser.ts:1024) and the structured case "let": handler at typescript-state-machine.ts:374 renders them. The forall keyword is not, and never was, an action-block AST node — it only appears in constraint expression parsing (parser.ts:274, 1103).

What the heuristic actually does

After the structured switch over action.statements produces bodyParts, a regex scans the rendered text for any identifier (\b([a-zA-Z_]\w*)\b) not in the known set (state vars, locals, ~100 reserved words, plus anything declared with let/const/var in the body). For each unknown, it emits a const x: any = {} stub prefixed with // FIXME: parser dropped let/forall. The cleaned text is produced by stripping strings, comments, and .field accesses — but the stripping is lossy, so the unknown set picks up tokens that are NOT real missing declarations.

Concrete symptom (Raft.ts StartElection)

StartElection(server: ServerId) {
  const xxx: any = {} as any; // FIXME: parser dropped let/forall
  const term: any = {} as any; // FIXME: parser dropped let/forall
  if (!(this.servers.has(server))) throw new Error("Guard failed: this.servers.has(server)");
  if (!(this.serverState.get(server)!.role === "follower")) throw new Error("Guard failed: ...");
  const newTerm = this.serverState.get(server)!.currentTerm + 1;
  this.decisionLog.push({ server: server, term: newTerm } as ElectionStarted);
}

xxx is the heuristic matching its own regex (e.g., \.\s*(\w+) → .xxx) and then emitting a stub for the synthetic name. term is a real let-style local that the structured emit handled correctly — but the heuristic is re-declaring it as a bogus any stub before the real code, which would shadow the real binding or fail tsc redeclaration checks if the build were run with noEmitOnError: true. 32 FIXME markers in KafkaProducer.ts, 12 in Raft.ts, similar counts across the other 14 examples. All 16 affected.

Why this matters semantically

The emitted TS looks type-safe (tsc --noEmit passes for the examples currently because the any stubs are valid TS). The state machine is silently wrong in any spec where the heuristic misclassifies a real local variable — the binding gets shadowed by an any, downstream uses become any-typed, and the runtime state mutations are no longer type-checked. This is the worst kind of bug: it fails open.

Scope

  1. Delete the preamble heuristic block at typescript-state-machine.ts:456-482 (the const reservedWords = new Set([...]) through the const finalBody = preamble ? ... : bodyPartsStr; line, inclusive).
  2. Change the return statement to use bodyPartsStr directly instead of finalBody (the variable goes away with the heuristic).
  3. Verify that tsc --noEmit --target es2020 still passes on every example that was previously clean. If a previously-clean example now fails, that is a real missing-binding bug that the heuristic was masking — surface it in a comment, do NOT silently re-add the heuristic.
  4. Verify that the 16/16 examples no longer contain // FIXME: parser dropped markers in the emitted TS.
  5. Document the deletion in a comment, including the original symptom (16/16 examples had const xxx: any = {} noise from a regex-matching-itself bug) so future readers know why the heuristic is gone.

Out of scope

  • Do NOT touch parser.ts. It is correct. The framing of the original (closed) ticket #43 was wrong on this point.
  • Do NOT add a new throw or console.error for unknown identifiers. Let tsc --noEmit be the real safety net — if a missing binding exists, TS will flag it as a redeclaration or undeclared-identifier error, which is the honest signal. (If we want a louder failure mode later, that is a separate ticket.)
  • Do NOT touch the case "ifblock": TODO branch at typescript-state-machine.ts:432 (B3 has its own ticket, #42).
  • Do NOT touch the init-block raw-string bug visible in Raft.ts constructor: this.servers = {"s1", "s2", ...} forall s in servers: serverState[s] == ...; That is a separate bug, filed as a follow-up below.
  • Do NOT run nix build or open a PR. Build only the compiler, post the diff as a comment.

Acceptance Criteria

  • Lines 456-482 of typescript-state-machine.ts (the const reservedWords block through const finalBody = ...) are deleted
  • The return statement at the end of emitAction uses bodyPartsStr directly (not finalBody)
  • tsc --noEmit --target es2020 passes on all 16 examples (run from compiler/ after build)
  • grep -c "FIXME: parser dropped" out/*.ts 2>/dev/null returns 0 for every example
  • No example that previously compiled clean now fails — if one does, that is a real missing-binding bug; document it in a comment, do not re-add the heuristic
  • Post the diff as a comment, including the line count change (should be a 27-line deletion plus a 1-line edit at the return)

Why this exists (replaces closed speckl#43)

The original B1 ticket (speckl#43) was diagnosed from the FIXME comment, which blamed the parser. The actual root cause is a post-emit heuristic in the generator. The parser correctly handles let; forall was never an action-block node. This re-diagnosis is grounded in a direct read of parser.ts and typescript-state-machine.ts and a side-by-side of the Raft.ts emitted output.

Follow-up (separate ticket if confirmed)

Init-block raw-string bug. Raft.ts constructor contains the text this.servers = {"s1", "s2", "s3", "s4", "s5"} forall s in servers: serverState[s] == { role: "follower" currentTerm: 0 votedFor: null log: List.empty commitIndex: 0 lastApplied: 0 }; rendered as a string literal that is then assigned to a typed property. The init-block emit is not consuming the parser's init body correctly. This is a different root cause and a different file region. Out of scope here. Flag it as a follow-up if it persists after this ticket ships.

  • The init-block follow-up (above) will be easier to diagnose once the preamble heuristic is gone, because some of the noise in init-block emissions is from the same regex-matching-itself bug.
## Problem (re-diagnosed 2026-06-02 19:00 PT, replaces closed speckl#43) The TypeScript generator at `compiler/src/generators/typescript-state-machine.ts:456-482` runs a *post-emit preamble heuristic* that silently invents `const x: any = {}` declarations for any identifier it cannot classify. The comment on the line is misleading — it claims the parser dropped `let`/`forall`, but the parser correctly emits `let` AST nodes (parser.ts:136, parser.ts:1024) and the structured `case "let":` handler at typescript-state-machine.ts:374 renders them. The `forall` keyword is not, and never was, an action-block AST node — it only appears in `constraint` expression parsing (parser.ts:274, 1103). ### What the heuristic actually does After the structured `switch` over `action.statements` produces `bodyParts`, a regex scans the rendered text for any identifier (`\b([a-zA-Z_]\w*)\b`) not in the known set (state vars, locals, ~100 reserved words, plus anything declared with `let`/`const`/`var` in the body). For each unknown, it emits a `const x: any = {}` stub prefixed with `// FIXME: parser dropped let/forall`. The cleaned text is produced by stripping strings, comments, and `.field` accesses — but the stripping is lossy, so the unknown set picks up tokens that are NOT real missing declarations. ### Concrete symptom (Raft.ts `StartElection`) ```ts StartElection(server: ServerId) { const xxx: any = {} as any; // FIXME: parser dropped let/forall const term: any = {} as any; // FIXME: parser dropped let/forall if (!(this.servers.has(server))) throw new Error("Guard failed: this.servers.has(server)"); if (!(this.serverState.get(server)!.role === "follower")) throw new Error("Guard failed: ..."); const newTerm = this.serverState.get(server)!.currentTerm + 1; this.decisionLog.push({ server: server, term: newTerm } as ElectionStarted); } ``` `xxx` is the heuristic matching its own regex (e.g., `\.\s*(\w+)` → `.xxx`) and then emitting a stub for the synthetic name. `term` is a real `let`-style local that the structured emit handled correctly — but the heuristic is **re-declaring it as a bogus `any` stub** *before* the real code, which would shadow the real binding or fail `tsc` redeclaration checks if the build were run with `noEmitOnError: true`. 32 FIXME markers in KafkaProducer.ts, 12 in Raft.ts, similar counts across the other 14 examples. Dispatch order locked — position 52_of_4 (2026-06-02 19:08 PT, Scott directive)

Scott picked option A for the speckl dispatch sequence:

Order Ticket Status
1 speckl#52 (B1-redux: delete preamble heuristic) this ticket — runs first
2 speckl#41 (B4: difference operator) runs after #52
3 speckl#42 (B3: real if/else) runs after #41
4 speckl#48 (B2.2: LTL/Z3 verify call-out) runs after #42

Why this position:

Dispatch mode: sequential (one delegate_task per ticket, per the 18:39 PT no-parallel-batches directive). Each gets its own 1200s child_timeout_seconds budget independently — no shared parent wall-clock.

Cron read: the next ticket-dispatch cron (every 30 min) will pick from the decomposed_tickets and dispatch_order fields in the state file. The state-file dispatch_order array has been updated to match this sequence; the cron honors it.

Position correction: the previous comment rendered the position as '52_of_4' due to a template interpolation bug. The actual position is 1 of 4. Order: #52 → #41 → #42 → #48.

🤖 CoS dispatch 2026-06-03 08:42 UTC — agent-engineering

Ticket: sscoble/speckl#52 (B1-redux: delete preamble heuristic)
Branch: fix/speckl-52-delete-preamble-heuristic (basing off fix/speckl-51-reapply-b2-1-and-49 @ 54024b7 — B2.1+#49 baseline in place)
Position 1 in dispatch_order (subtractive, asymmetric risk, cleans bodyPartsStr for #42)
Sequential mode (Scott directive 2026-06-02 18:39 PT: no parallel batches)

Scope (from ticket body):

  1. Delete the preamble heuristic block at typescript-state-machine.ts:456-482 (the const reservedWords = new Set([...]) through const finalBody = preamble ? ... : bodyPartsStr; line, inclusive).
  2. Change the return statement to use bodyPartsStr directly (drop the finalBody variable).
  3. Verify tsc --noEmit --target es2020 passes on all 16 examples.
  4. Verify grep -c "FIXME: parser dropped" out/*.ts returns 0 for every example.
  5. No previously-clean example may now fail. If one does, document the real bug in a comment — do NOT silently re-add the heuristic.
  6. Document the deletion in a comment so future readers know why.

Verification harness (from #51 dispatch, working on this branch):

cd /home/sscoble/speckl
npx --prefix compiler tsc # build the compiler first
node compiler/dist/index.js -t typescript examples/Raft.speck -o /tmp/spec-out
# repeat for all 16 affected examples
npx --prefix compiler tsc --noEmit --target es2020 --module esnext --moduleResolution bundler --skipLibCheck --strict false /tmp/spec-out/*.ts

Out of scope (do NOT touch):

  • parser.ts (correct; the original #43 framing was wrong)
  • The ifblock TODO at typescript-state-machine.ts:432 (B3, separate ticket #42)
  • The init-block raw-string bug (different root cause, file separately)
  • nix build, open a PR, push to remote

Budget: 1200s wall-clock (single-ticket sequential). 50 tool calls typical. 50 calls x 7-8s each is the practical wall.

Close protocol (verified 2026-06-03 21:25 UTC): CoS will verify git diff --stat on fix/speckl-52-delete-preamble-heuristic against the base, run the verification harness, commit working tree to the branch with a descriptive message, verify commit SHA + clean diff, THEN PATCH close. Do NOT push to remote; do not open a PR.

Dependencies: none.

🤖 Subagent verification — speckl#52

Status: PARTIAL — 5 of 6 ACs met (the 6th is 15/16 examples, but the failure is a pre-existing real bug, not a regression from this patch).

What was done

Deleted the post-emit preamble heuristic in compiler/src/generators/typescript-state-machine.ts:456-491 (the const reservedWords = new Set([...]) through const finalBody = preamble ? ... : bodyPartsStr; block — 36 lines total: comment + 16-line reservedWords Set + const known + 2 for loops + second comment + 6-line cleaned chain + const found + const undefined_ + const preamble + const finalBody). Changed ${finalBody} → ${bodyPartsStr} in the return template literal. Single return point in emitAction confirmed via search; no other references to finalBody, preamble, undefined_, cleaned, or reservedWords remain in the file.

Diff stat

compiler/src/generators/typescript-state-machine.ts | 39 +---------------------
1 file changed, 1 insertion(+), 38 deletions(-)

That's the 36-line heuristic block (deletions) + the 1-line return edit (${finalBody} → ${bodyPartsStr}, counted as 1 deletion + 1 insertion) = 38 deletions, 1 insertion. The ticket estimated ~27 lines; the actual heuristic was larger (the reservedWords Set alone is 16 lines). Pure single-file change, git status is clean of any other modifications.

Verification harness

Built with cd compiler && npx tsc — clean (no errors).

Generated all 16 examples to /tmp/spec-out/ — all 16 generated without errors:
AccessControl, AccountLedger, DrugDosageCalculator, KafkaKRaft, OAuth2AuthorizationCode, Paxos, PaymentService, PreconditionTest, Raft, RetryHandler, SQLitePager, SQLiteWAL, TemperatureMonitor, TigerBeetleLedger, ToggleSwitch, TwoPhaseCommit.

tsc --noEmit --target es2020 --module esnext --moduleResolution bundler --skipLibCheck --strict false *.ts results: 15/16 pass. The only file with errors is OAuth2AuthorizationCode.ts (72 errors, all module-scope syntax errors in the type-declaration preamble).

grep -c "FIXME: parser dropped" /tmp/spec-out/*.ts: all 16 files return 0. ✅

Previously-masked bug surfaced (1)

OAuth2AuthorizationCode.ts — multi-line Map(K, { ... }) record types are being parsed line-by-line.

The spec declares state vars like:

accessTokens: Map(AccessToken, {
    client_id: ClientId,
    user_id: UserId,
    scope: Scope,
    expires_at: Nat,
    session_id: SessionId,
    refresh_token: RefreshToken
})

But parseStateBlock (parser.ts:538) does inner.split(/;|\n/), so the type expression for accessTokens becomes the first line only: Map(AccessToken, {. The record body fields (client_id: ClientId, ...) become separate varStrs entries, and cleanName then misclassifies the fragmented type as an opaque ident. The generator emits:

type Bool }) = any;                          // line 26
type Map(AccessToken, { client_id: ClientId = any;   // lines 31-33
type Nat }) = any;                            // line 34
type RefreshToken }) = any;                  // line 37

Important: I verified this is a pre-existing bug by git stash-ing my patch, rebuilding, regenerating OAuth2, and re-running tsc — the baseline (with the heuristic present) also produces 72 errors, identical. The heuristic operated only inside emitAction (action bodies), not at module-scope type declarations, so it could not have been masking this. This bug has nothing to do with the deleted heuristic. Filing as a separate bug is the right call — likely a new ticket for the parser's multi-line type handling (parser.ts:538 + parseTypeExpr's Map(/Set(/List( branches). The ticket scope explicitly excludes parser.ts, so I did NOT attempt a fix here.

The 15 other examples compile clean with the patch in place. tsc no longer sees the bogus const xxx: any = {} declarations the heuristic was emitting, and the structured case "let": emit at typescript-state-machine.ts:374 renders the real bindings correctly without any shadowing.

Why the heuristic was load-bearing garbage

  • The const xxx: any = {} line in Raft.ts was the heuristic matching its own regex (the cleaned.replace(/\.\s*(\w+)/g, ".xxx") step synthesized xxx, and then the subsequent matchAll(/\b([a-zA-Z_]\w*)\b/g) picked it up and emitted a stub for it).
  • The const term: any = {} line was the heuristic re-declaring a real let-style local the structured emit had already rendered correctly — a shadow that would have caused real tsc errors if noEmitOnError: true were set.
  • All 16 emitted files were riddled with these; the KafkaProducer was hit hardest (32 markers) per the dispatch context.

Acceptance criteria checklist

  • AC1: Lines 456-491 (the actual heuristic) deleted. (Ticket said 456-482, but the real block ran to 491 because the heuristic had grown — same intent.)
  • AC2: Return statement uses bodyPartsStr directly.
  • [⚠️] AC3: tsc --noEmit --target es2020 passes on 15/16 examples. OAuth2AuthorizationCode fails — but with a pre-existing, unrelated bug (see above). Per the dispatch's "If a previously-clean example now fails with a real tsc error, document it precisely and continue" rule, this is a finding, not a blocker.
  • AC4: grep -c "FIXME: parser dropped" returns 0 for every example. ✅
  • AC5: No regression. The only failure is pre-existing (verified by git stash baseline run). Heuristic was not masking it.
  • AC6: This comment is the diff post (diff also saved to /tmp/speckl-52-diff.patch).

Out-of-scope items (untouched, as instructed)

  • parser.ts — not modified. The OAuth2 multi-line type bug is not fixed here, as instructed; needs a separate ticket.
  • The case "ifblock": TODO at typescript-state-machine.ts:432 — not touched (B3 / #42).
  • The init-block raw-string bug in Raft.ts constructor — not touched.
  • No git push, no PR, no nix build.

🤖 **Subagent verification — speckl#52** **Status: PARTIAL — 5 of 6 ACs met (the 6th is `15/16` examples, but the failure is a pre-existing real bug, not a regression from this patch).** ### What was done Deleted the post-emit preamble heuristic in `compiler/src/generators/typescript-state-machine.ts:456-491` (the `const reservedWords = new Set([...])` through `const finalBody = preamble ? ... : bodyPartsStr;` block — **36 lines** total: comment + 16-line reservedWords Set + `const known` + 2 `for` loops + second comment + 6-line `cleaned` chain + `const found` + `const undefined_` + `const preamble` + `const finalBody`). Changed `${finalBody}` → `${bodyPartsStr}` in the `return` template literal. Single return point in `emitAction` confirmed via search; no other references to `finalBody`, `preamble`, `undefined_`, `cleaned`, or `reservedWords` remain in the file. ### Diff stat ``` compiler/src/generators/typescript-state-machine.ts | 39 +--------------------- 1 file changed, 1 insertion(+), 38 deletions(-) ``` That's the 36-line heuristic block (deletions) + the 1-line return edit (`${finalBody}` → `${bodyPartsStr}`, counted as 1 deletion + 1 insertion) = 38 deletions, 1 insertion. The ticket estimated ~27 lines; the actual heuristic was larger (the reservedWords Set alone is 16 lines). Pure single-file change, `git status` is clean of any other modifications. ### Verification harness Built with `cd compiler && npx tsc` — clean (no errors). Generated all 16 examples to `/tmp/spec-out/` — all 16 generated without errors: AccessControl, AccountLedger, DrugDosageCalculator, KafkaKRaft, OAuth2AuthorizationCode, Paxos, PaymentService, PreconditionTest, Raft, RetryHandler, SQLitePager, SQLiteWAL, TemperatureMonitor, TigerBeetleLedger, ToggleSwitch, TwoPhaseCommit. **`tsc --noEmit --target es2020 --module esnext --moduleResolution bundler --skipLibCheck --strict false *.ts` results: 15/16 pass.** The only file with errors is `OAuth2AuthorizationCode.ts` (72 errors, all module-scope syntax errors in the type-declaration preamble). **`grep -c "FIXME: parser dropped" /tmp/spec-out/*.ts`: all 16 files return 0.** ✅ ### Previously-masked bug surfaced (1) **`OAuth2AuthorizationCode.ts` — multi-line `Map(K, { ... })` record types are being parsed line-by-line.** The spec declares state vars like: ``` accessTokens: Map(AccessToken, { client_id: ClientId, user_id: UserId, scope: Scope, expires_at: Nat, session_id: SessionId, refresh_token: RefreshToken }) ``` But `parseStateBlock` (parser.ts:538) does `inner.split(/;|\n/)`, so the type expression for `accessTokens` becomes the *first line only*: `Map(AccessToken, {`. The record body fields (`client_id: ClientId, ...`) become *separate* `varStrs` entries, and `cleanName` then misclassifies the fragmented type as an opaque ident. The generator emits: ```ts type Bool }) = any; // line 26 type Map(AccessToken, { client_id: ClientId = any; // lines 31-33 type Nat }) = any; // line 34 type RefreshToken }) = any; // line 37 ``` **Important: I verified this is a pre-existing bug by `git stash`-ing my patch, rebuilding, regenerating OAuth2, and re-running tsc — the baseline (with the heuristic present) also produces 72 errors, identical.** The heuristic operated only inside `emitAction` (action bodies), not at module-scope type declarations, so it could not have been masking this. This bug has nothing to do with the deleted heuristic. **Filing as a separate bug is the right call** — likely a new ticket for the parser's multi-line type handling (parser.ts:538 + parseTypeExpr's `Map(`/`Set(`/`List(` branches). The ticket scope explicitly excludes parser.ts, so I did NOT attempt a fix here. The 15 other examples compile clean with the patch in place. `tsc` no longer sees the bogus `const xxx: any = {}` declarations the heuristic was emitting, and the structured `case "let":` emit at typescript-state-machine.ts:374 renders the real bindings correctly without any shadowing. ### Why the heuristic was load-bearing garbage - The `const xxx: any = {}` line in Raft.ts was the heuristic matching its own regex (the `cleaned.replace(/\.\s*(\w+)/g, ".xxx")` step synthesized `xxx`, and then the subsequent `matchAll(/\b([a-zA-Z_]\w*)\b/g)` picked it up and emitted a stub for it). - The `const term: any = {}` line was the heuristic re-declaring a real `let`-style local the structured emit had already rendered correctly — a shadow that would have caused real `tsc` errors if `noEmitOnError: true` were set. - All 16 emitted files were riddled with these; the KafkaProducer was hit hardest (32 markers) per the dispatch context. ### Diff Full diff saved to `/tmp/speckl-52-diff.patch` (51 lines including the unified-diff header). The src change in full: ```diff diff --git a/compiler/src/generators/typescript-state-machine.ts b/compiler/src/generators/typescript-state-machine.ts @@ -453,45 +453,8 @@ function emitAction(action: ActionNode, stateVarNames: Set<string>, mapVarNames: } const bodyPartsStr = bodyParts.filter(Boolean).join('\n'); - // Detect parser-dropped variables (let/forall blocks the parser doesn't emit) - const reservedWords = new Set([...100+ entries...]); - const known = new Set([...localNames, ...stateVarNames, ...reservedWords]); - for (const sv of knownStateValues) known.add(sv); - for (const m of bodyPartsStr.matchAll(/\b(?:const|let|var)\s+(\w+)/g)) known.add(m[1]); - // Clean body: remove strings, comments, property/type names, type assertions - const cleaned = bodyPartsStr.replace(...); - const found = new Set<string>(); - for (const m of cleaned.matchAll(/\b([a-zA-Z_]\w*)\b/g)) found.add(m[1]); - const undefined_ = [...found].filter(id => !known.has(id)); - const preamble = undefined_.map(id => ' const ' + id + ': any = {} as any; // FIXME: parser dropped let/forall').join('\n'); - const finalBody = preamble ? preamble + '\n' + bodyPartsStr : bodyPartsStr; - return ` ${action.name}(${params}) { -${finalBody} +${bodyPartsStr} }`; } ``` ### Acceptance criteria checklist - [x] **AC1:** Lines 456-491 (the actual heuristic) deleted. (Ticket said 456-482, but the real block ran to 491 because the heuristic had grown — same intent.) - [x] **AC2:** Return statement uses `bodyPartsStr` directly. - [⚠️] **AC3:** `tsc --noEmit --target es2020` passes on **15/16** examples. OAuth2AuthorizationCode fails — but with a pre-existing, unrelated bug (see above). Per the dispatch's "If a previously-clean example now fails with a real `tsc` error, document it precisely and continue" rule, this is a finding, not a blocker. - [x] **AC4:** `grep -c "FIXME: parser dropped"` returns 0 for every example. ✅ - [x] **AC5:** No regression. The only failure is pre-existing (verified by `git stash` baseline run). Heuristic was *not* masking it. - [x] **AC6:** This comment is the diff post (diff also saved to `/tmp/speckl-52-diff.patch`). ### Out-of-scope items (untouched, as instructed) - `parser.ts` — not modified. The OAuth2 multi-line type bug is *not* fixed here, as instructed; needs a separate ticket. - The `case "ifblock":` TODO at typescript-state-machine.ts:432 — not touched (B3 / #42). - The init-block raw-string bug in Raft.ts constructor — not touched. - No `git push`, no PR, no `nix build`. ### Files modified - `compiler/src/generators/typescript-state-machine.ts` (only this one; 1 file, 1 insertion, 38 deletions) - `compiler/dist/typescript-state-machine.js` (auto-regenerated by `tsc`; not in commit per the scope)

🤖 CoS verification + closure — speckl#52 (B1-redux: delete preamble heuristic)

Cycle: 2026-06-03 08:42 UTC dispatch → 08:55 UTC closure
Branch: fix/speckl-52-delete-preamble-heuristic (basing off B2.1+#49 baseline fix/speckl-51-reapply-b2-1-and-49 @ 54024b7)
Commit: b2793cc89990885377da75c09b1f27cb1e6ef92e
Author: agent-engineering (subagent)
Wall-clock: 414s (50 calls, max_iterations) + ~10 min CoS verification

Acceptance criteria

AC Status Evidence
1. Delete heuristic at typescript-state-machine.ts:456-482 ✅ PASS git diff main..HEAD --stat shows 1 file changed, 1 insertion, 38 deletions. Subagent deleted in one patch call.
2. Return statement uses bodyPartsStr directly ✅ PASS Verified by independent re-read of file at line 456-462. The return now uses ${bodyPartsStr} directly, no finalBody variable.
3. tsc --noEmit passes on all 16 examples ⚠️ PARTIAL 15/16 pass. OAuth2AuthorizationCode.ts has 72 pre-existing errors at module-scope type declarations (parser.ts:538 — multi-line Map(K, { ... }) type misparsed line-by-line). CoS independently verified by git stash + rebuild + regen + tsc: identical 72 errors with AND without the patch. The heuristic operated inside emitAction (action bodies), not at module-scope type declarations, so it could not have been masking this.
4. grep -c "FIXME: parser dropped" returns 0 ✅ PASS 0 FIXME markers across all 16 emitted files.
5. No previously-clean example now fails ✅ PASS The only failure is OAuth2, which already failed pre-patch. Independent verification via git stash baseline test confirms.
6. Post the diff as a comment ✅ PASS This comment + the subagent verification comment id 3040 (per the dispatch).

Verification (CoS-independent re-run)

  • Built compiler on patched branch: clean
  • Regenerated all 16 examples: 16/16 generated
  • Ran grep -c "FIXME: parser dropped" /tmp/spec-out-v2/*.ts: 0 across all files
  • Ran full tsc --noEmit --target es2020 --module esnext --moduleResolution bundler --skipLibCheck --strict false *.ts on the 16 files: 15/16 pass clean
  • OAuth2 baseline (with patch git stash-ed): identical 72 errors at identical lines → confirms pre-existing
  • 1 vitest failure (should parse input with record type): reproduces on parent commit 54024b7 → pre-existing, not caused by patch
  • Working tree clean: git status shows 0 modified files

$ git log fix/speckl-51-reapply-b2-1-and-49..HEAD --stat
b2793cc fix(speckl#52): delete broken preamble heuristic in TS generator

Decision: close as PASS with one open finding

  • The 5/6 ACs that pass are the central intent: delete the broken heuristic, stop the FIXME markers, stop the type-shadowing. All done.
  • The 1/6 AC (AC3) fails only on OAuth2, and OAuth2's failure is a pre-existing parser bug in parser.ts:538 — a different file, a different code path, and a different root cause. The dispatch's rule was: "If a previously-clean example now fails with a real tsc error, that is a real missing-binding bug; document it in a comment, do not re-add the heuristic." OAuth2 was NOT clean pre-patch (it was failing with the same 72 errors). So no previously-clean example was broken by the patch.
  • Per the dispatch's PARTIAL handling rule: "document it precisely and continue — that is a finding, not a blocker." I have done that.

Follow-up filed

The OAuth2 parser bug is out of scope for #52. The dispatch explicitly excluded parser.ts. I am filing a new follow-up ticket:

sscoble/speckl#53 (created in this cycle) — "[parser] Multi-line Map(K, { ... }) type misparsed line-by-line in parseStateBlock (parser.ts:538)" — separate root cause, separate file, separate ticket.

Out of scope (correctly untouched)

  • parser.ts — correct per the original diagnosis
  • The ifblock TODO at typescript-state-machine.ts:432 — B3 ticket #42
  • The init-block raw-string bug in Raft.ts constructor — separate root cause
  • nix build, PR, push to remote — none done

Why this ships (not blocked on OAuth2)

The heuristic was actively emitting misleading noise in every example. The 16/16 FIXME markers, the 16/16 shadowed-bindings risk, the misleading "parser dropped let/forall" comment — all of that is now gone. Keeping this PR open while waiting for the parser fix would be holding a clear win hostage to an unrelated bug. The two tickets (#52 generator + #53 parser) can ship in any order or together.

Next-cycle priority

  • Now dispatchable: speckl#53 (parser bug, follow-up filed this cycle)
  • Still blacklisted: speckl#41, speckl#42 (double_timeout, no new attempts)
  • Awaiting Scott: speckl#43 (B1 let/forall — but now superseded by #52 + #53)
  • Awaiting Scott: speckl#48 (B2.2 LTL verify — Z3 call-out chosen 2026-06-02 18:50 PT)
  • In completed_awaiting_external: marcus/engineering#20 (5/7 done)
  • Audit complete, no action: marcus/scobleclaw#22

Protocol validation

  • ✅ CoS commit-before-close protocol executed: git diff --stat verified, commit b2793cc made with descriptive message, working tree clean at close, commit SHA recorded in this comment
  • ✅ No working-tree-only verification (the regression that caused #51 to be filed is fixed)
  • ✅ Branching from the right baseline (B2.1+#49, not main)

Issue closed.
