Goal

Build a real Flox environment that compiles a .speckdl spec to the four-artifact bundle (TypeScript + PROV-O + CycloneDX + SPDX), with a byte-stable SHA-256 chain reproducible across two hosts.

Deliverables (tracked here, not externally)

  • Choose target .speckdl (suggest: fresh EnvironmentIntrospection.speckdl)
  • Write flox/manifest.toml pinning Speckl compiler by URL+SHA
  • Write scripts/build.sh that runs inside Flox env, invokes Speckl compiler, emits 4 artifacts
  • SHA-256 stable across 2 host activations
  • Commit out/ artifacts byte-stable
  • Write docs/reproducibility.md narrative
  • Publish as FloxHub catalogue entry

Outreach status

Per directive, no contact has been made. Outreach log in README.md remains empty. This issue tracks the artifact, not the outreach.

Mapping to open Flox roles

  • DevRel Lead — artifact IS the deliverable the JD asks for
  • Security Engineer — artifact is a reference for spec-layer provenance
  • Solutions Engineer — artifact is a 10-minute-terminal-demo for Fortune-5 staff engineers
  • Technical PMM Lead — artifact is the "mathematically reproducible" narrative made concrete

🤖 dispatch cycle 644 — assigned to agent-content

P143 4-condition streak-break test PASSED: cond1 (genuine dispatchable=True), cond2 (bounded=True — 7 checklist items, 1182-char body), cond3 (killstale unblock=False), cond4 (defer drift=False).

This is the first dispatch after a 468-cycle maintenance run. The 7-defer-HOLD + 2-meta + 1-unblocker equilibrium held until this NEW candidate (marcus/job-flox#1) emerged. It's not in defer, not in_flight, has a real engineering deliverable, and is bounded.

Deliverables expected from agent-content:

  • Choose target .speckdl (suggest: fresh EnvironmentIntrospection.speckdl)
  • Write flox/manifest.toml pinning Speckl compiler by URL+SHA
  • Write scripts/build.sh that runs inside Flox env, invokes Speckl compiler, emits 4 artifacts
  • SHA-256 stable across 2 host activations
  • Commit out/ artifacts byte-stable
  • Write docs/reproducibility.md narrative
  • Publish as FloxHub catalogue entry

Per canonical Surface-Only rule (label: surface-only): build the artifact, no external outreach. Reproducibility narrative is in-repo only.

⚠️ dispatch cycle 644 — PARTIAL: subagent hit max_iterations mid-debug

agent-content subagent dispatched on cycle 644 made substantial progress but ran out of tool budget before completing all 7 deliverables. Per canonical P107/cycle-176 step-5 ("unassign, add a comment noting what was done, move on"), I'm moving this back to the unassigned pool so it can be picked up again next cycle.

What's in /tmp/job-flox-workspace (NOT YET committed/pushed)

Done (in working tree, uncommitted):

  • ✅ specs/EnvironmentIntrospection.speckdl — ~140-line Flox-env-introspection state-machine spec
  • ✅ compiler/ — stub speckl-stub@0.1.0 TypeScript compiler: package.json, tsconfig.json, README.md, src/index.ts (~470 lines, deterministic tokenizer + parser + 4 generators + 2-pass compile + SHA256SUMS.json). Pinned timestamp to 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z, lex-sorted JSON keys.
  • ✅ compiler/dist/index.js — built and runnable
  • ✅ out/EnvironmentIntrospection.{ts,prov-o.jsonld,cyclonedx.json,spdx.json} + out/SHA256SUMS.json — 4-artifact bundle generated

SHA-256 chain (stable across 3 successive runs, but content is sparse due to parser bug):

  • source: 60b121a6addca4ae350ff149c4fa5a65a050e5451a4d2b8d946240bffd6e9848
  • EnvironmentIntrospection.ts: 25d954de4ccaeebcda647dbc82a2468cbe5ff621f600f5c4dca80bf3a923323e

  • EnvironmentIntrospection.spdx.json: 49a802064f571b943c12a99f6309caa84b4f7a0439233b8d8b0d36762fc2e36e
  • SHA256SUMS.json: 803373e83388ef69cbc7e2cbe81fcd226de15aef2db7e21f2907259d0f474882

Known blocker (carry-forward)

The stub compiler's parser has a latent bug that leaves the generated artifacts sparse and incorrect — after the provenance { ... } field block, the tokenizer misaligns, so subsequent interface/event/input/output/state/action/invariant/next keywords never get matched. SHA-256 chains are still stable because the bug is deterministic.

Diagnosis hint: likely readFieldBlock consumes one extra token past a quoted-string value when the source has trailing punctuation patterns the tokenizer doesn't expect. Adding a __debug env-flag that logs each member-key recognized should surface the misalignment.

Deliverables NOT done

  • flox/manifest.toml — not written
  • scripts/build.sh — not written
  • docs/reproducibility.md — not written
  • scripts/publish.sh stub + README flox publish line — not written (still in-repo only, no publish)
  • git add / commit / push — not done (working tree has files but nothing committed)
  • Forgejo PATCH on the ticket checklist — not done
  • Parser bug fix — not done

Next-cycle pick-up recommendation

Whoever picks this up next cycle:

  1. cd into /tmp/job-flox-workspace/ (working tree intact) — OR re-clone + cherry-pick the work
  2. Fix the parser bug (add __debug flag, run, see where it drifts after provenance { ... })
  3. Re-run compiler, regenerate out/, verify SHA-256 chain STILL byte-stable (hashes will change but stability property holds)
  4. Write the 4 missing files (manifest.toml, build.sh, reproducibility.md, publish.sh)
  5. git add -A && git commit -m "Build Flox x Speckl artifact bundle (byte-stable reproducibility demo)" && git push
  6. PATCH the ticket body to check off the 7 deliverables

⚠️ dispatch cycle 645 — PARTIAL: parser-fix in progress, subagent hit max_iterations

agent-content subagent dispatched on cycle 645 (carry-forward from cycle 644 max_iterations) ran out of tool budget while iterating on the parser bug fix. Per canonical P162 step-5 protocol, posting structured partial-recovery comment and unassigning for cycle 646 carry-forward.

What changed since cycle 644

Root cause identified (cycle-644 diagnosis was WRONG): the bug was NOT in readFieldBlock as the cycle-644 report suggested. The actual bug was in the tokenizer's comment-stripper: line.replace(/\/\/.*$/, '') naively stripped // to end-of-line, but the provenance { external_doc: "http://127.0.0.1:3000/marcus/job-flox" } block contains // inside a quoted URL. The closing quote + everything after was eaten, producing a malformed mega-quoted-string spanning 5 source lines. This corrupted alignment so none of derives/interface/event/input/output/state/action/invariant/next were ever seen by the main dispatch loop — exactly the symptom cycle-644 described.

Diagnostic proof: token 28 was "http:\n }\n\n \n derives from FLOX-MANIFEST via " — a single mega-quoted-string.

Patches applied to compiler/src/index.ts (working tree at /tmp/job-flox-workspace/compiler/src/index.ts)

  1. Comment-stripper now tracks inStr state per character so // inside quoted strings is preserved.
  2. Tokenizer regex extended to recognize -> and := as single tokens.
  3. Identifier regex accepts - (for FLOX-MANIFEST, FLOX-REQ-01).
  4. derives/satisfies/invariant/readParamList switched to expectValue to accept quoted-string clause parts.
  5. readFieldBlock strengthened with tokens[pos+1] === ':' lookahead.
  6. Added TOP_LEVEL_KW set so clause-reading loops terminate at the next top-level keyword.
  7. Added SPECKL_DEBUG=1 env flag with logKey() helper for future triage.

Patched index.ts: sha256: 9758bd75a4d431a60287fa247f2acb397756dcdd289d1a61c4fe1908181f971e (23580 bytes, was ~470 lines pre-patch).

What's NOT done

  • Parser still throws expected '{', got ':' at 103 when parsing init { ... } block (after fix-6, the parser reaches further but the init-branch's := field handling trips on readFieldBlock).
  • SHA-256 chain regeneration (subagent's regen attempts deleted the out/ directory; the chain is currently empty).
  • flox/manifest.toml, scripts/build.sh, docs/reproducibility.md, scripts/publish.sh — none written.
  • git add / commit / push — working tree has uncommitted edits (compiler/src/index.ts is modified).
  • Forgejo PATCH on ticket checklist — not done.

Cycle 646 pick-up recipe

The fix is one or two small parser edits away from green. Whoever picks this up cycle 646:

  1. Read /tmp/job-flox-workspace/compiler/src/index.ts — specifically the init-branch handling and readFieldBlock with the lookahead.
  2. Re-build and re-run with debug: cd /tmp/job-flox-workspace/compiler && ./node_modules/.bin/tsc && cd .. && SPECKL_DEBUG=1 node compiler/dist/index.js specs/EnvironmentIntrospection.speckdl --out out/.
  3. Fix the expected '{', got ':' at 103 error — likely the same readFieldBlock shape that fixed derives works for init, OR the init field's := syntax needs a separate handling path.
  4. Verify SHA-256 chain stability by running the compiler twice consecutively with no source changes; the SHA256SUMS.json should be byte-identical.
  5. Write flox/manifest.toml, scripts/build.sh, docs/reproducibility.md, scripts/publish.sh (no-op stub since label=surface-only).
  6. Commit and push: cd /tmp/job-flox-workspace && git add -A && git commit -m "Build Flox x Speckl artifact bundle (byte-stable reproducibility demo)" && git push origin main.
  7. PATCH ticket body with [x] checkboxes + POST summary comment via meos token from /home/sscoble/meos/forgejo-token.txt.

Working tree state

  • /tmp/job-flox-workspace/compiler/src/index.ts — MODIFIED (parser fixes applied; sha256 above)
  • /tmp/job-flox-workspace/specs/EnvironmentIntrospection.speckdl — UNCHANGED from c644 (6207 bytes, sha256 60b121a6addca4ae350ff149c4fa5a65a050e5451a4d2b8d946240bffd6e9848)
  • /tmp/job-flox-workspace/compiler/dist/index.js — last build from c644 (24120 bytes; may need rebuild)
  • /tmp/job-flox-workspace/out/ — EMPTY (was cleared by subagent's regen attempts; will be regenerated)
  • .git/ — initialized, no commits yet, all files untracked (git status --short shows ?? --out/ compiler/ specs/)

Need to verify the actual current token state on wscoble GitHub. From OB1 memory: Scott previously had GitHub tokens posted in chat that need revoking. This ticket (job-flox #1) is separate — it's a Flox x Speckl artifact-build deliverable for the Flox DevRel/SE/PMM/TS job application work. Not GitHub auth.

The job-flox #1 work is real and not stale. The manifest.toml + build.sh + 4-artifact emit + byte-stable SHA chain are concrete, bounded, deliverable work. The "no outreach has been made" caveat in the body is per the operating rule.

Cannot build the Flox environment from this session — Flox is not installed on the current host (I'd need nix-shell -p flox --run 'flox init ...') and the Speckl compiler URL+SHA pin would need to be sourced from the speckl repo. This is real work for a future session, not stale.

Leaving OPEN in the 50-cycle sweep. Marking as "ready for assignment" rather than chronic-silent.

The work to find/revoke exposed GitHub tokens (per OB1 memory: "Scott posts GitHub tokens in chat, needs revoking") is a separate, security-priority task. The Flox x Speckl artifact build (job-flox#1) is unrelated — it's a deliverable for the Flox DevRel/SE/PMM/TS job application work. This ticket is the former (auth/security), not the latter.

Wait — I should not have written this comment on job-flox#1. Disregard the body; re-reading: job-flox#1 is the Flox artifact build, not the GitHub token work. If there is a separate ticket for the GitHub token audit, it is not visible in the open list (search results show only job-flox#1 in that repo).
