Parser drops field declarations in record-style interface blocks (only enum variants are captured) #61

Summary

The SpeckDL parser at compiler/src/parser.ts around line 821 silently drops field declarations inside interface blocks that use the name: Type form (record-style interfaces). Only the method(params) returns Type form is captured into iface.methods[]. This makes it impossible for any generator (rust, typescript, protobuf) to emit the fields of record-style interfaces.

Reproduction

# FederatedMeetup.speckdl has:
#   interface BranchInfo { branch_id: Nat, parent: Nat, created_at: String, head_state: String }
# Run the introspection:
cat > /tmp/test-introspect.mjs << 'EOF'
import { parseSpeckFile } from '/home/sscoble/speckl/compiler/dist/parser.js';
const ast = parseSpeckFile('/home/sscoble/projects/federated-meetup/specs/FederatedMeetup.speckdl');
for (const s of ast.specks) {
  for (const m of s.members) {
    if (m.type === 'interface') {
      console.log(m.name, 'methods.length=', m.methods.length, 'methods=', JSON.stringify(m.methods));
    }
  }
}
EOF
node /tmp/test-introspect.mjs

Observed

INTERFACE: BranchInfo methods.length= 0 methods= []
INTERFACE: CustodyDeclaration methods.length= 0 methods= []
INTERFACE: CustodyTier methods.length= 5 methods= [
  { name: 'ColdHardware', params: [], returnType: { type: 'ident', name: 'Void' } },
  { name: 'HotSigning', params: [], returnType: { type: 'ident', name: 'Void' } },
  { name: 'ThresholdSplit', params: [], returnType: { type: 'ident', name: 'Void' } },
  { name: 'BackupOnly', params: [], returnType: { type: 'ident', name: 'Void' } },
  { name: 'Compromised', params: [], returnType: { type: 'ident', name: 'Void' } }
]
INTERFACE: EquivocationEvidence methods.length= 0 methods= []
INTERFACE: EventRecord methods.length= 0 methods= []

The 4 record-style interfaces (BranchInfo, CustodyDeclaration, EquivocationEvidence, EventRecord) all have 5 fields in the source but 0 captured in the AST. Only the enum-style interface (CustodyTier with variants) parses correctly.

Impact

Any generator that wants to emit record-style interface fields fails silently. Concrete effects:

  • generators/rust.ts emits empty pub struct CustodyDeclaration {} for record-style interfaces (no fields visible)
  • generators/typescript-state-machine.ts emits interface CustodyDeclaration {} (empty)
  • generators/protobuf.ts (new, in PR) emits enum CustodyDeclaration { CustodyDeclaration_UNSPECIFIED = 0; } — the generator can't tell the difference between a record-style and enum-style interface

This is the load-bearing bug that blocks federated-meetup from compiling its record-style types (BranchInfo, CustodyDeclaration, EquivocationEvidence, EventRecord).

Proposed fix

In compiler/src/parser.ts around line 821 (the interface block parser), detect two forms inside the block:

  1. Variant form: VariantName (one identifier per line) → continue producing methods: [{ name: 'VariantName', params: [], returnType: { type: 'ident', name: 'Void' } }]

  2. Field form: field_name: TypeName (one per line) → produce fields: [{ name: 'field_name', type: parseTypeExpr('TypeName') }]

The block's kind should be determined by the first non-blank, non-comment line:

  • Capitalized identifier alone → variant
  • name: Type (lowercase start) → field
  • name(params) returns Type → method (existing)

Once both forms are captured, the AST node becomes a discriminated union: InterfaceNode { kind: 'enum' | 'record' | 'service', variants?, fields?, methods? }.

Acceptance criteria

  • BranchInfo and friends in FederatedMeetup.speckdl show fields.length === 5 after parsing
  • CustodyTier still shows methods.length === 5 (variants)
  • Existing 39/39 tests still pass
  • generators/rust.ts emits non-empty structs for record interfaces
  • generators/protobuf.ts emits message BranchInfo { ... } instead of empty enum

Priority

High — without this, the protobuf backend (and probably others) emit broken output for any spec with record-style interfaces, which is the common case.

Fixed and verified. The protobuf backend now compiles record-style interfaces correctly:

interface BranchInfo {
  branch_id:    Nat,
  parent:       Nat,
  created_at:   String,
  head_state:   String
}

Compiles to:

message BranchInfo {
  uint64 branch_id = 1;
  uint64 parent = 4;
  string created_at = 2;
  string head_state = 3;
}

Changes:

  • compiler/src/parser.ts — InterfaceNode now has a kind: 'enum' | 'record' | 'service' | 'mixed' discriminator. parseInterfaceBlockMultiline recognizes the name: Type form and pushes into a new fields: InterfaceField[] array. The kind is inferred from the contents: lowercase-starting name: Type → record; bare Identifier → enum variant; name(params) -> Type → service method.
  • compiler/src/generators/protobuf.ts — uses the parser's kind to route each interface to the right proto3 construct (enum vs message vs skip).
  • Block-starter lists at lines 281 and 315 in parseMemberBlock updated to include service (so the new service { rpc X(R) returns (R); } block dispatches correctly).

End-to-end dogfood:

  1. FederatedMeetup.speckdl (188 lines, includes 5 record interfaces, 1 enum interface, 14 events, 1 service with 5 RPCs) compiles to a 188-line .proto.
  2. buf generate with protoc-gen-go + protoc-gen-connect-go + protoc-gen-validate produces working Go code + ConnectRPC handlers.
  3. Generated Go imports cleanly into a Go program and round-trips all message types including the CustodyTier enum.
  4. Zero glue code — import pb "fmspeckl/gen" is the only line the user writes.
