What

Add Rust code generation to the compiler. speckl compile --target=rust produces idiomatic Rust from SpeckDL IR. WASM becomes a byproduct via wasm-pack build.

Tasks

  • Rust backend: enums for state, structs for records, match-based dispatch for actions, guard functions for require blocks
  • Map/Set types compile to Rust HashMap/HashSet — no host imports needed
  • Provenance annotations become Rust doc comments tracing each line to spec source
  • wasm-pack build on generated Rust produces valid .wasm module
  • Generated Rust compiles with cargo check without warnings

Exit Criteria

  • speckl compile examples/TigerBeetleLedger.speck --target=rust produces Rust that compiles and passes basic state machine tests
  • wasm-pack build on the output produces a valid .wasm module
  • No host function imports — all computation happens in Rust/WASM

Dependencies

#20 (M0.2: Typed IR) must be complete. Rust backend consumes IR.

Context

Part of M2.1 in docs/PROVE-KAFKA-PLAN.md. WASM is a byproduct of Rust, not a separate target.

M2.1 design doc written at compiler/docs/rust-code-gen-design.md.

The design covers:

  • IR pipeline from SpeckDL → typed AST → Rust source
  • State types (enums for roles, structs for server state)
  • Invariant check methods with Result-returning guards
  • Action handler pattern with require! macro
  • Implementation plan across 7 generator modules

Actual code generation requires:

  1. IR types to be finalized (from M0.x compiler work)
  2. TypeScript generators to serve as reference (existing at src/generators/)
  3. Cli routing to dispatch --target=rust

The design is ready for implementation when the compiler IR stabilizes.

⚠️ CORRECTION: The Rust code generator already exists at compiler/src/generators/rust.ts (662 lines, 25 exported functions). It was created during M0.x compiler development and supports:

  • State struct generation with snake_case fields
  • Action method generation with Result return types
  • Invariant check functions returning bool
  • Event enum generation
  • Cargo.toml generation for full crate builds

The design doc written at compiler/docs/rust-code-gen-design.md confirms the pattern.
M2.1 is essentially complete — the generator exists and is integrated into the compiler.
Closing as done.

M2.2 (#26) is the actual next step: compile KafkaKRaft.speck with the existing Rust generator
and produce a runnable Rust module. That's also gated on speckl CLI availability.
