Design critique loop — iterate sprites, emotes, and movement to excellence #12

Goal

Establish a design critique → implement cycle for the Stardew Valley frontend. Each iteration: someone with design taste criticizes the current visual output, engineering implements the changes, we review again.

Current State (v0.1)

The frontend at src/frontend/ has:

  • 6 buildings: Workshop, Studio, Cabins, Library, Shrine, Campfire
  • 9 agent sprites with CSS pixel art (box-shadow technique)
  • Activity states: idle (bob), working (sparkles + scale), thinking (rotate + "..." bubble), blocked (shake + "!"), offline (grayscale + "sleep")
  • Emoji accessories per department: 📋⚙️🔮🛡️🔍🌿📝✨🗝️
  • CSS transitions for movement
  • Dirt paths, trees, rocks, flowers, fence posts for decoration
  • Bottom status bar + connection indicator
  • Agent colors only (no unique shapes per department)

What Needs Iteration

  1. Agent sprites — currently all the same shape, just color-swapped. Need unique character silhouettes, accessories, and poses per department (per Scott's direction in issue #11 comments)
  2. Emotes/animations — the activity states need more personality: distinct idle animations per agent, more expressive working/thinking states, maybe occasional "emotes" (wave, celebrate, etc.)
  3. Movement — currently simple CSS transitions between grid positions. Could add path-following, speed variation, pauses at crossroads, agent-to-agent interaction (passing by, stopping to "chat")
  4. Visual polish — pixel art quality, color harmony, readability at small sizes, building detail

Process

Each critique round: reviewer inspects the live site at https://os.scoble.me/office/ + reads the source code, then produces a structured critique with specific, actionable items. Engineering implements the top-priority items. Then we review again.

First Critique (this round)

Review the current farm scene and provide a prioritized critique:

  1. What's working well (keep)
  2. Top 5 issues ranked by impact (fix these first)
  3. Specific CSS/code suggestions for each fix
  4. Stretch goals (nice to have)

Focus especially on: agent personality (unique silhouettes, not just colors), animation expressiveness, and movement feel.

Design Critique #1 complete

Full critique at design-critique-1.md. Findings:

  • What works: palette, building CSS, activity state architecture, grass texture, campfire animation
  • Agent personality score: 2.5/10 — all sprites are identical shape, just color-swapped
  • Top issues: unique per-agent silhouettes (P0), building label readability (P1), name clutter (P1), linear movement (P2), static buildings (P2)

Dispatching @engineering to implement P0 + P1 fixes.

### Design Critique #1 complete Full critique at `design-critique-1.md`. Findings: - **What works:** palette, building CSS, activity state architecture, grass texture, campfire animation - **Agent personality score:** 2.5/10 — all sprites are identical shape, just color-swapped - **Top issues:** unique per-agent silhouettes (P0), building label readability (P1), name clutter (P1), linear movement (P2), static buildings (P2) Dispatching @engineering to implement P0 + P1 fixes.

Triage (2026-05-24): Keep Open — Needs Iteration

Design Critique #1 was completed by agent-cos (full findings at design-critique-1.md). Agent personality score rated 2.5/10. Top issues identified: unique per-agent silhouettes (P0), building label readability (P1), name clutter (P1), linear movement (P2), static buildings (P2).

This is an ongoing iterative design critique → implement loop. Keeping open for future rounds. The issue body already has a good checklist/framework.

Keeping open — iterative design work.

🎨 Design Critique #2 + 1 P1 fix landed (2026-06-01)

CoS cloned the repo, reviewed the current state against critique #1, and shipped one of the open issues.

Fix landed: Issue 3 (P1) — names on hover only

File changed: packages/frontend/src/AgentSprite.jsx (1 file, 18 insertions / 16 deletions)
Diff:

-      {/* Agent name label */}
-      <Text ...>
-        {agent.name}
-      </Text>
+      {/* Agent name label — hover only (per design-critique-1 Issue 3, P1) */}
+      {hovered && (
+        <Text ...>
+          {agent.name}
+        </Text>
+      )}

The name label now wraps in {hovered && ...}, matching the existing hover-tooltip pattern. Agents with overlapping positions no longer stack white text. Stardew Valley convention. Low-risk single conditional.

What's still open (critique #1 issues 4-5 + 3 new)

# Severity Issue Effort
4 P2 Direct-lerp movement, no path awareness, agents clip on collision 1-2 hr (jitter+offset), 4+ hr (full pathfinding)
5 P2 Buildings are static — no interior activity indicator ~30 min (window dots)
6 P2 No emote system (wave, celebrate, interact) ~1 hr (schema change)
7 P3 Building labels are functional but generic ~20 min (zone displayName)
8 P3 No sound (chiptune, etc.) Out of scope

v0.3 recommendation

Pick ONE P2 to ship in v0.3. My pick: A) Building interior glow (Issue 5). Highest signal-per-line, no schema change, immediately makes buildings feel "alive" rather than decorative. ~30 min of focused work.

Defer the rest. One issue per PR keeps reviews clean. The critique loop is healthy — don't break it by stuffing 4 changes into one PR.

Process note

Cycle so far: Critique #1 (May 19) → v0.2 implementation → Critique #2 (June 1, this commit) → v0.3. Healthy 2-week cadence.

Closing — spatial-office is being decommissioned

Scott's directive (2026-06-07, #board-room thread "Kill spatial office; it no longer makes sense to me"): tear down the spatial office entirely.

Teardown in progress:

  • systemd service stopped and disabled
  • nginx /office/ vhost removed
  • NixOS module + configuration.nix import removed (rebuild pending)
  • homepage dashboard entry to be removed
  • source trees (/home/sscoble/.openclaw/workspace/spatial-office, ~/spatial-office, /opt/spatial-office, /srv/spatial-office) queued for removal
  • this Forgejo repo will be archived (history preserved)

This critique-loop ticket is moot — closing without implementing. If the office concept comes back in a different form later, we can re-open a fresh ticket against whatever replaces it.
