Structured bash results now hold the full output up to 1 MiB instead of the
model-facing 2000 lines or 50KB, keeping the first and last 512 KiB of longer
output, and add truncated and full_output_path.
Tools without a custom call renderer now show their arguments as key=value
pairs when collapsed and one key: value line per argument when expanded.
MCP tools get a server/tool title and results that collapse to 5 lines.
This adds codemode and MCP support to pi. Codemode (packages/codemode) runs
model-written JavaScript in a QuickJS wasm VM inside a worker. From there the
script calls pi's tools as async functions, uses a per-session store, and can
read the model catalog and run classifiers. The codemode tool in coding-agent
is compatible with Codex's exec tool, and codemode.mode works like Codex's
tool modes (on or only). Large results are written to a JSON temp file. MCP
(packages/mcp) is a standalone client for stdio and streamable HTTP servers,
with OAuth.
The core only gets general mechanisms; codemode, tool_search and MCP are
built-in extensions that use them. Other extensions can replace these
built-ins. Tools declare an exposure: direct, model-only, codemode, deferred
or hidden. prepareLoadout() lets an orchestrating tool change which tool
declarations the model sees. ctx.executeTool() runs nested calls through
validation and the tool_call/tool_result hooks. Those calls emit events with
parentToolCallId and are recorded as bounded nestedCalls on the parent
result, which compaction and HTML export use. Tools can also return
structuredContent with an outputSchema, and can report errors with isError
instead of throwing. MCP servers come from mcp.json (global, or per project
after the project is trusted) or from pi.registerMcpServer(). They are
managed with /mcp and pi mcp list|login|logout, and their runtimes load on
first use.
Closes#10040
Theme previews re-render the whole transcript, and streaming re-renders
every frame, so per-line and per-session work dominated in long sessions.
- visibleWidth: fast path for ANSI-styled ASCII, allocation-free escape scanning
- Box: compare unpadded child lines and skip a second width measurement
- Markdown: reuse parsed tokens across invalidation
- footer: cache usage totals and context usage per session state
- bash results: cache the collapsed preview including the expand hint
- sanitizeBinaryOutput: single regex replace
Strict tool schemas make models send null for omitted optional fields.
The read renderer only treated undefined as missing, so full-file reads
rendered as "path:1".
fixes#9996
Map signal termination to conventional nonzero exit codes and reject null exit codes from custom shell operations while preserving partial output.
fixes#9577
When tools are registered by an extension (e.g. Kimchi) the execute callback
receives an ExtensionContext with the real session cwd. Use ctx.cwd || cwd so
tools resolve paths against the current session cwd instead of the cwd captured
at tool creation time.
Applies to read, write, edit, grep, find, ls, bash, and powershell.

A presentation draws tool calls and colours; it executes nothing and validates
nothing. Both cost it typebox anyway, which is 17 MB of module graph: 682 ESM
modules whose narrowest entry re-exports ~300 of them, so there is no
cherry-picking and both doors had to close before any process stopped paying.
ToolExecutionComponent no longer looks up createAllToolDefinitions by tool name;
callers pass what to render, and its parameter type now says so. Each built-in
tool's presentation moves to core/tools/renderers/<tool>.ts, leaving the schema
and execute path behind; bash and powershell share createShellRenderers(prompt).
Tool definitions keep their exact public shape and spread the renderers in.
withBuiltInRenderers() preserves the old fallback, where an extension override
without renderers still draws like the built-in - that behaviour used to live
inside the component, and two tests caught its absence.
theme.ts keeps palettes; the typebox schema and its error formatting move to
theme-json.ts, installed through setThemeJsonValidator. Built-in themes were
never validated, so only processes that load user-authored themes need it. pi
installs it during startup, before the first theme loads, and the invalid-theme
message is unchanged.
Measured with mini, running built output: the presentation drops from 87 MB and
99 files to 72 MB and 88 files, with typebox absent from its graph, while still
rendering tool output through the real built-in renderers.
Also: packages/server's vitest aliases were prefix matches, so a subpath import
resolved onto index.ts/utils/uuid and failed five suites; they are exact now
with explicit subpath rules. And mini-test.sh spawns mini the way pi-test.sh
spawns pi, with --fresh/--stop for the detached session server.
Relativize absolute find results with path.relative() instead of slicing
at searchPath.length + 1. path.resolve() keeps the trailing separator for
root paths (POSIX / and Windows bare drive roots like I:\), so the slice
dropped the first character of the first path segment. Preserve directory
markers using platform-aware separators so Windows paths do not gain "//"
and valid POSIX backslashes remain unchanged.
This also avoids treating sibling paths with a shared prefix as children.
Relative results returned by custom glob operations now pass through
unchanged instead of being resolved against process.cwd(), which produced
invalid paths whenever cwd differed from the search path.
Fixes#6104
Add the constrained sampling API and provider plumbing for OpenAI and Anthropic tool calls, including grammar sampling variants and model capability metadata.
Wrap the path shown in read/write/edit/ls tool titles in an OSC 8 file:// hyperlink when the terminal advertises hyperlink support.
The link target is always the absolute path, while the visible text stays relative/home-shortened and line annotations (e.g. :120-140) are kept out of the target.
