With `codemode.mode: "on"`, each declared tool gets a description suffix
that says what a script call resolves to. For an object output schema,
`describeOutput` shortens this to field names. Any other schema fell
back to the whole rendered TypeScript type, collapsed onto one line. A
tool with a union output schema therefore put its full output type,
nested fields and comments included, into every request. The reporter's
`process` tool, a union of 7 variants, added about 8,000 characters.
Collapsing the type onto one line also left `//` comments in the middle
of the text.
This change:
- **Unions:** for `anyOf`/`oneOf` schemas where every variant is an
object, the suffix lists each variant's field names, joined by ` | `.
- **`const` fields:** `describeFields` now shows the value of `const`
fields, so a discriminator like `action` stays visible. For example: ``
`{ action: "start", process } | { action: "list", processes, truncated?
}` ``.
- **Other multi-line types**, such as an array of objects: instead of
the inlined type, the suffix says `` a value; `await
describeTool("name")` shows its type ``. `describeTool()` already
returns the full declaration.
- **Single-line types** such as `number` are unchanged.
Testing:
- I added a test in `test/suite/agent-session-codemode.test.ts` that
checks the suffix for three tools: one with a union output, one with an
array-of-objects output, and one with a `number` output. It fails
without the change and passes with it.
- `node ../../node_modules/vitest/dist/cli.js --run
test/suite/agent-session-codemode.test.ts
test/suite/agent-session-mcp.test.ts` passes, including the existing MCP
description assertions.
- `npm run check` is clean.

A misplaced options line was ignored, so its timeout_ms never applied and
the script ran without a deadline. parseCodemodeSource now throws
CodemodeSourceError before the script runs.

joinAdjacentText checked endsWith on the growing joined string, which
makes V8 flatten the concatenation on every item. Collect each text run
in an array, check the separator against the last non-empty part, and
join once. Same fix in the durable code mode copy.
closes#10678
Tools that reach other tools declare it with reachesTools(input); MCP uses it to wait for the servers a call needs and to decide which codemode or tool_search tool to activate, instead of parsing codemode scripts and comparing parameter schemas. Namespaces get aliases, replacing codemode's MCP-specific __ suffix rule.
pi-codemode no longer knows MCP: MCP_TYPESCRIPT_PREAMBLE and mcpStructuredContentSchema() are removed, and the MCP result schema describes itself, with the server's local $refs relocated so they resolve as before.
Adds the openai-decisions classifier API with gpt-6-luna on the openai provider. bool questions map to predicates with the criteria in the instructions, refusals fail the result, and gateway timeouts (504) are not retried. The model needs an API key and is hidden from availability while openai uses Sign in with ChatGPT.
Adds optional images to ClassifierContext. Models without image input and APIs that cannot send images return an error result. Codemode's models.classify() accepts images.
Moves the shared classifier HTTP code out of system-one-shared.ts into classifier-shared.ts.
Text items get ==> text N/M <== headers when there are several, and
console output is grouped into one <console_output> block. Console text
items are marked with console: true.
Rules and the tool list follow the declared tools (active minus
hiddenDeclarations). The skills hint names no tool when the reader is
hidden. Codemode shows each tool's prompt guidelines with its
declaration, via the new ToolLoadout.getPromptGuidelines().

image() output is also written to a temp file and the result names the
path before each image, so later turns can reference generated images.
Output files are now created through one helper (still tmpdir()) and
are readable only by the user.

Move the codemode script reference, including the models API, into
docs/codemode.md and keep only one line per global in the tool
description. Declared tools get a one-line note on how scripts call them,
and the codemode system prompt guidance and MCP server section are shorter.
With the default tools a GPT-5.6 request drops from about 5,300 to 3,300
tokens.
Errors now point the way back: unknown tools and models members name close
matches, models.classify() and models.generateImages() validate their
arguments, unknown or mistyped models point to getAvailableOfType(),
store() overflow explains the store, and unshown generated images get a note.
Scripts run image models with the session's credentials, like
models.classify(). Results are base64 image blocks that image() attaches
to the codemode result; usage counts toward the session cost.
In codemode.mode "only", tools whose declarations codemode hides were still
listed in the <tools> section. Drop their snippets so the list matches the
declared tools.
closes#10192
image() now rejects malformed base64 and data without a PNG, JPEG, GIF,
or WebP signature, and derives the MIME type from the signature. Invalid
image blocks were persisted and made every later provider request fail.

Codemode sums the usage of models.classify() calls into its tool result and shows each call's cost. Usage of tools called through ctx.executeTool() is added to the calling tool's result usage instead of being dropped.
This adds codemode and MCP support to pi. Codemode (packages/codemode) runs
model-written JavaScript in a QuickJS wasm VM inside a worker. From there the
script calls pi's tools as async functions, uses a per-session store, and can
read the model catalog and run classifiers. The codemode tool in coding-agent
is compatible with Codex's exec tool, and codemode.mode works like Codex's
tool modes (on or only). Large results are written to a JSON temp file. MCP
(packages/mcp) is a standalone client for stdio and streamable HTTP servers,
with OAuth.
The core only gets general mechanisms; codemode, tool_search and MCP are
built-in extensions that use them. Other extensions can replace these
built-ins. Tools declare an exposure: direct, model-only, codemode, deferred
or hidden. prepareLoadout() lets an orchestrating tool change which tool
declarations the model sees. ctx.executeTool() runs nested calls through
validation and the tool_call/tool_result hooks. Those calls emit events with
parentToolCallId and are recorded as bounded nestedCalls on the parent
result, which compaction and HTML export use. Tools can also return
structuredContent with an outputSchema, and can report errors with isError
instead of throwing. MCP servers come from mcp.json (global, or per project
after the project is trusted) or from pi.registerMcpServer(). They are
managed with /mcp and pi mcp list|login|logout, and their runtimes load on
first use.
