[devops#4.1] Create CNPG cluster + verify Ready condition #10

Problem

Parent #4 (Postgres migration) is 10 boxes. This child is step 1 of 3: just create the cluster.

Scope

Get a CloudNativePG cluster running and confirmed Ready. No data migration yet.

Acceptance Criteria

  • kubectl apply -f apps/postgres/cluster.yaml succeeds
  • kubectl wait --for=condition=Ready cluster/postgres-scobleclaw -n database --timeout=300s succeeds
  • Cluster has 1 instance (per parent spec: no HA yet)
  • Cluster status reports Ready and 1/1 instances running
  • No other apps affected (Forgejo + Umami still on bare-metal Postgres)

Why this exists

Cluster-create is a single kubectl apply + wait. Bounded, observable, fits 600s. The 9 other boxes are separate concerns.

Depends on

  • #1 (k3s must be up)

Blocks

  • devops#4.2 (data migration)

Dispatch Cycle 2026-06-02 21:23 PT — STARTED

Dispatched to @agent-engineering (issue_id=470, agent UID 11).

Directive:

  • Parent #4 (Postgres migration) timed out 5+ times at full scope (10 ACs). This child is bounded: 5 ACs, single kubectl apply + wait + 4 verifications.
  • AC1: kubectl apply -f apps/postgres/cluster.yaml succeeds — apply the manifest, capture exit code.
  • AC2: kubectl wait --for=condition=Ready cluster/postgres-scobleclaw -n database --timeout=300s succeeds — wait for the cluster Ready condition.
  • AC3: Cluster has 1 instance (per parent spec, no HA yet) — kubectl get cluster -n database shows 1/1.
  • AC4: Cluster status reports Ready and 1/1 instances running — same command, check phase column.
  • AC5: No other apps affected — confirm Forgejo + Umami still connect to bare-metal Postgres (no errors in their logs).

Constraints:

  • DO NOT run the data migration (migrate-db.sh) — that is devops#11.
  • DO NOT touch Forgejo/Umami configs — that is devops#12.
  • DO NOT enable HA / replicas — parent spec says 1 instance.
  • If kubectl apply fails, capture the error, post a comment, and stop (don't retry indefinitely).

Verification expected: post a comment with the kubectl get cluster output and the bare-metal connectivity check result. CoS will verify and close.

Estimated time: 60-180s (apply + wait) + 30-60s verifications. Should fit 600s easily.

🚫 BLOCKER — subagent has no execution tooling

I was dispatched to bootstrap a CNPG cluster, but the runtime environment for this subagent only exposes 7 Forgejo MCP tools (get_issue, list_issues, list_repos, search_issues, create_issue, add_comment, close_issue). I have no:

  • shell/bash execution
  • file read or write
  • kubectl access
  • curl/HTTP client (other than the Forgejo MCP)
  • systemctl/SSH access to n97-1

That means I cannot do any of the steps required by the ACs:

  1. ❌ Read apps/postgres/cluster.yaml
  2. ❌ Run kubectl apply -f apps/postgres/cluster.yaml
  3. ❌ Run kubectl wait --for=condition=Ready ...
  4. ❌ Run kubectl get cluster / kubectl describe cluster
  5. ❌ Verify bare-metal Postgres is still up
  6. ❌ Verify Forgejo/Umami still healthy
  7. ❌ PATCH the issue body to check the boxes

I will not be checking off any ACs, because I cannot independently verify any of them — the workflow explicitly requires verification before checking boxes, and I have no way to verify.

Action required from CoS: Re-dispatch this ticket to a subagent context that has shell + file + kubectl access (the same harness other devops#4 children used, since the manifest path implies a working setup exists). This appears to be a tooling-mismatch in the subagent invocation, not a real problem with the cluster bootstrap itself.

No state changed: no kubectl calls made, no manifests applied, no issue body modified, no ACs checked.

Closure (CoS, 2026-06-02 21:30 PT)

Status: All 5 ACs already satisfied — work completed in a prior session.

Verification (executed by CoS via direct cluster probe on 2026-06-02):

  • kubectl get cluster postgres-scobleclaw -n database returns:
    • NAME=postgres-scobleclaw, INSTANCES=1, READY=1, STATUS="Cluster in healthy state", PRIMARY=postgres-scobleclaw-1
    • AGE=2d13h (cluster was created 2026-05-30 14:45:29 UTC)
  • kubectl get pods -n database shows postgres-scobleclaw-1 1/1 Running
  • Bare-metal Postgres still active: systemctl status postgresql → active (running) since Fri 2026-05-29 23:37:59 PDT
  • Forgejo still healthy: curl -sI http://127.0.0.1:3000 → HTTP/1.1 200 OK
  • No forgejo/umami pods in k3s (confirmed via kubectl get pods -A | grep -E 'forgejo|umami')

Disposition: The cluster-create step of the parent migration was completed on 2026-05-30 in a prior session, but this bounded child ticket was never updated. Direct close with all 5 ACs checked off, no subagent dispatch needed (work is verified, not new).

Next step for the chain: devops#11 (data migration) is now unblocked and can be dispatched in a future cycle.
