From d71c090c95678ce434510a44ff8f5c9288bd0e27 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Scott Scoble Date: Thu, 16 Jul 2026 17:38:58 -0700 Subject: [PATCH] fix(content): cut generic senior-engineer anecdote from post 5 opening Scott called it 'dumb.' It was. The cut paragraph was a generic 'senior engineer / junior engineer / 200-line function / 30 seconds / three days / cost a quarter' fable. It was the most AI-tell paragraph in the dark-factory series: a story invented to fill the space where Scott's real story would have gone. The voice profile is explicit: 'Stories come from real life: things that happened, conversations, moments that stuck. No invented anecdotes.' Cut: 4-sentence paragraph between the lead question and the definition of taste. Kept: the lead question ('A dark factory can ship code. It cannot ship the judgment that knew the code was right.') and the definition ('That is taste. Taste is the human judgment that knows the right shape of a system before it exists.'). Kept: the 'three things, not one' named example on line 44. That one is part of the abstract definition of encoded vs unencoded taste, not a story; it stays. Post 5 now opens with the lead question, then the definition. No story between them. The argument starts clean. The next step is for Scott to write the real anecdote for the opening if he wants one; the post works without it. --- src/pages/blog/the-taste-problem.astro | 2 -- 1 file changed, 2 deletions(-) diff --git a/src/pages/blog/the-taste-problem.astro b/src/pages/blog/the-taste-problem.astro index 6ff9091..458bc1a 100644 --- a/src/pages/blog/the-taste-problem.astro +++ b/src/pages/blog/the-taste-problem.astro @@ -23,8 +23,6 @@ import BaseLayout from '../../layouts/BaseLayout.astro';

A dark factory can ship code. It cannot ship the judgment that knew the code was right.

There is a thing a senior engineer knows that a junior engineer does not. It is not the language. It is not the framework. It is the syntax of the patterns. It is the shape of the right answer before the answer exists. The senior engineer looks at a function and says, in seconds, "this is the wrong shape." The junior engineer spends days on the same function, writes the same wrong answer, runs the tests, and ships it. The tests pass. The code is fine. The shape is wrong. The shape is what costs the team.

That is taste. Taste is the human judgment that knows the right shape of a system before it exists.

Why the dark factory has a taste problem
